Your Eye Test Explained
At Urban Optics, we take your eye examination very seriously. That is why we allow at least 30 minutes for each examination, which is much longer than most other opticians. We have invested heavily in the latest equipment to ensure that every part of your eye examination is as thorough and accurate as possible. With equipment like the Topcon Maestro 3D OCT, the latest Henson visual fields screener and Topcon phoropter head unit, it's no wonder we are considered by many to be the best opticians in the area.
Your eye examination consists of two main parts:
Part 1: The Pre-Test:
One of our team members will take you through to the pre-test area. Here you will undergo a series of preliminary examinations using our state of the art equipment. We will estimate your prescription and measure your intra-ocular pressures in order to give the optometrist all the information they require to give you a thorough examination. We may assess your visual fields and take scans on our OCT machine at this point. Our team member will also run through a few quick questions with you to ensure we fully understand your eye care needs.
Part 2: The Optometrist:
The actual eye examination itself consists of four main parts and is conducted by one of our highly experienced optometrists. The main parts of the eye examination include:
(a) The initial conversation and history taking:
Our optometrist will discuss in detail the reason for your visit as well as any ocular and systemic health problems. By taking a thorough history, our optometrist can establish any areas of concern and provide you with all the necessary help and advice you may require.
(b) The subjective refraction:
This is when your prescription is formulated. What ends up in your spectacles or contact lenses is a direct result of this part of the examination. Our state of the art phoropter head means our subjective results are second to none.
(c) The ocular examination:
The most important part of the examination bar none! William Shakespeare once said "the eyes are the windows to your soul....". How true this is. Many systemic disorders are regularly picked up at your eye examination. At Urban Optics we use state of the art equipment including the latest slit lamp from Topcon, a digital Volk lens and the Topcon Maestro OCT to ensure no stone (or eyelid) is left unturned.
(d) The summary:
At the end of the examination our optometrist will discuss their findings, along with any prescription requirements you may (or may not) have, and the different means of correction available to you. This is your opportunity to ask your optometrist any final questions you may have thought of during the examination and to ensure you leave the examination room feeling fully satisfied. The optometrist will hand you over to a member of our team in the privacy of the consulting room, passing on any relevant information and dispensing requirements. Should any additional tests be required, the optometrist will ensure a team member completes these before you leave.
